Abstract: Andy Dufresne is sent to Shawshank Prison for the murder of his wife and her secret lover. He is very isolated and lonely at first, but realizes there is something deep inside your body that people can't touch or get to....'HOPE'. Andy becomes friends with prison 'fixer' Red, and Andy epitomizes why it is crucial to have dreams. His spirit and determination lead us into a world full of imagination, one filled with courage and desire. Will Andy ever realize his dreams?

Come on guys! According to the IMDb Top 250 THIS is the second best film EVER! Better than Citizen Kane? Better than Godfather Part II? Better than ALMOST EVERYTHING. br> No, it's a very, very long, very, very predictable, very, very cliched, very. very old-fashioned and sentimental film, blessed by some good performers (especially James Whitmore, who, alas, does not figure prominently enough.)
It worries me that many of the comments here seem to think the film artistically transcends the usual Hollywood fare, when in actual fact, it wallows in all the conventions of its genre.
I give it 6/10, mainly because I like Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
The only people who could mistake this for a Great Film, would be those who mistake the works of Stephen King for Great Literature.

Morgan Freeman's role really defined my generation. His performance as "Red" was probably the best I've ever seen.
I'm not a big Tim Robbins fan, in fact this role is the only one I like, maybe Bull not on this level. Andy Dufrane, really makes the best of what would simply drive most of us to the brink of insanity. He did it because he found friends. Which did become his family.
Andy was a difficult man to know, he was so smart so intelligent. Even Red his friend who was telling the story didn't really seem to understand him, at least until the end. I love it how Andy had to put himself into positions to make the prison is own. He got himself out of a bad situation by befriending his enemies, and then when the time was right, taking them out. While in their minds they were using Andy for their benefits, but Andy knew he used illiant.
These two friends in a sense had their own lives defined by their friendship. How many people can say that have ever had a friend like that? I hope that in the next 20 years my best friend, will have help define me.
The best thing about this movie, is how simple they made it. "Get Busy Livin' or get busy dyin." That in and of itself is advice we all need, especially when work or school seems to dictate our routines.
My advice watch this movie. It is the best of the last 50 years. Period.
